Home Teleworking: A Study of Its Pioneers
Article Abstract:
Energy shortages and the high cost of gasoline are creating an interest in telecommuting (working at home through computer terminals). The labor force involved is diverse. Advantages to the employee include: 1. commuting time spent on other activities, 2. decreased costs, 3. increased contact with family members, 4. increased productivity. Employers benefit through increasing access to contract labor and competent labor unable to work on- site. Some employers realized a cost advantage, others do not. There seems to be a trend toward telecommuting, especially for the competent homebound individual unable to maintain full-time employment.
