How persistently do firms innovate?
Article Abstract:
An analysis on UK firms revealed that firms tend to produce major innovations and patents only once in a long period of time. This was concluded after 3,304 firms and 1,624 enterprises were evaluated according to their patent activities and production of major innovations, respectively. The analysis further negated the principle of dynamic economies of scale, which holds that firms that produce large number of major innovations will spontaneously innovate. It was further shown that negative duration of dependence is not exhibited by firms which produce innovations and patents.

Learning-before-doing in the development of new process technology
Article Abstract:
The impact of various learning techniques on the development of new process technology was investigated via 23 case studies from the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Specifically, the relationship between the development costs and the timing of technology transfer to the production line was examined. The results showed that learning-before-doing methods such as prototyping, laboratory experiments and computer simulation are essential in disciplines where the theoretical and practical knowledge base remains small.

Sources of imitation: improving bank process capabilities
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the sources of innovation, with emphasis on imitation. The banking industry was chosen as the sample sector since it is rarely considered in the literature on technical change. Results showed that imitators are more likely to use a variety of channels for enhancing process capabilities compared to innovators. Their sources of imitation were found to be more informal and non-market-mediated in nature.
