Leadership and substitutes for leadership among professional and nonprofessional workers
Article Abstract:
Do professionals and nonprofessionals react in similar ways to leadership in organizations? A study of workers at several hospitals and research organizations in the Southwest found that there are both similarities and differences between the groups. Among both kinds of workers, clear leadership and support from leaders were important to job satisfaction. Formal rules helped and procedures were important to effective leadership in both groups. However, the more interesting work and organizational rewards allowed professionals to create surrogates to leadership support that nonprofessionals do not have.

OD and self-fulfilling prophecy: boosting productivity by raising expectations
Article Abstract:
Expectations have largely been ignored by social scientists. However, research indicates that expectations could be self-fulfilling prophecies in organizational development (OD). This means that OD programs are effective in so far as they arouse higher expectations and consultants, by raising expectations through their appearance, may be self-fulfilling prophets. Raising expectations should be a central factor in OD programs.

Team building by disclosure of internal frames of reference
Article Abstract:
Team building by using disclosure of internal frames of reference seems to present an effective new alternative for applied psychologists. In a study of 14 work teams, the groups that attended sessions where internal alignment information was shared scored higher on surveys of cooperation behavior than did the control group immediately after the program. Two months later, the positive effects had grown even stronger.
