Our greatest export: foreign lawyers learn more than a textbook knowledge of justice
Article Abstract:
Foreign exchange program for young lawyers, such as the one sponsored by the ABA and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (IATL), offer young foreign lawyers a first hand look at civil rights and the American legal system. In the ABA/IATL program, each lawyer is paired with a IATL member as a mentor and gets to spend a week in Washington, D.C., experiencing American government first hand. By being paired with an attorney who involves the foreign lawyer in their own practice, the lawyers are able to see most aspects of the American legal system during their visit.

"Who the hell cares about a lot of these cases?" Profile: David Myers, padre and practitioner
Article Abstract:
David Myers is a Jesuit who earned a law degree so that he could provide low-cost legal services to the poor residents of Guadalupe, AZ. Myers, who often receives no more than a plate of tamales from his clients as payment, is renowned for his spartan lifestyle and intense commitment to justice. Indeed, he has earned the enmity of many Arizona lawyers and politicians by zealously defending the rights of his half Mexican-American, half Yaqui Indian clients in immigration cases. He combines his legal work with his long-standing role as the community's spiritual leader.

Delayed justice: the Rosewood story
Article Abstract:
The surviving victims of the Rosewood, FL, massacre of 1923 and the families of those who did not survive were awarded $2.1 million in 1994. The Florida legislature passed a bill to pay the victims based on the Japanese Repatriation Act of 1988 after claims were filed on a pro bono basis by lawyers from the firm Holland and Knight. The massacre involved the burning of Rosewood, an African-American community, by a white mob while police ignored their actions. Eight people died and the survivors did not speak out for fear of retaliation.
