PHA technological crossroads

Article Abstract:

Criteria for the selection of appropriate computer systems for Public Housing Authorities are discussed. In choosing computer systems, the various competing industry standards must be reviewed based on performance, accessibility of software and the expected costs within a five year period. The use of Fourth Generation hardware and software languages (4GL) are recommended, since these are compatible with various computer systems. 4GL software also uses programming standards that ensure documented source codes and allow various user interfaces. In addition, the cost-efficiency of future improvements in computer systems must be evaluated based on the ability to accomodate larger volumes of data, the ease in improving the data base management system and software, and the ease in modifying the system to reduce processing time.

Bombs and blockbusters: World War II nostalgia at the movies is blurring the picture of Kosovo

Article Abstract:

It is conceivable that the popularity of recent war films, such as `Saving Private Ryan' and `The Thin Red Line,' are helping to enlist public support for the US-NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. Americans may want to delude themselves into believing that success in Kosovo will compensate them for the US failure in Vietnam. This is nothing more than self-indulgent compensation without consideration for the horror that war creates.
