Public health and human rights
Article Abstract:
Many socioeconomic factors, not just medical care, determine individual health, and most of the research into the health of populations identifies societal factors as the key determinants of health status. Modern human rights, arising as it does outside the health domain, thus seems a more useful mode of contemplating public health efforts to address the societal determinants of health. HIV/AIDS and reproductive health illustrate the health and human rights connection.

Placing the Convention on the Rights of the Child in an American context
Article Abstract:
The United Nations approved the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1989, and the US signed the CRC, intended to give an international basis to children's rights and protection, in 1995. Because of strong opposition by conservative Christian groups, the CRC has yet to be submitted to the Senate for ratification. Proponents of the CRC must refute the exaggerated claims of its opponents that the treaty would undermine the rights of parents.
