Reflections on the rituals of death
Article Abstract:
The person who lost his mother narrates the situation and the context the 'Book of Common Prayer' provided to say prayers at the time of death of his mother. Until his mothers death he thought of funeral rituals in public terms dictated by rubrics and conventions. He appreciates the glories of the 'Book of Common PrayerE, which has texts for virtually every contingency and is not a sacred text and users are relatively free to do as they wish. Until my mother's death, the author but one afternoon, in the presence of his dead matriarch, he and his family invented his own ritualistic way of coming to terms with his mother's death, as the Book of Common Prayer provided the context.

Obituaries are much more than mere notices of death and serve as cultural artifacts, tributes to friends and family members or abbreviated biographies, snapshots of human life. Not long ago, virtually everyone in a community received recognition after death but currently, the dominant corporate structure has rendered a two-tiered system of recognition, one bough with hard cash and the other a tribute to corporate patronage and a life time of privilege.

When death comes in a nursing home: A ritual to say good-bye
Article Abstract:
Chaplain and the other staff helps residents of nursing homes to leave their life and their home one final time with dignity and in the days and hours before a resident dies, families are welcome to come and stay as long as they would like. The basis of the care is the recognition that each person is of value and more the person is known to the staff, the higher are the spirits for maintaining dignity and honor in death.
