Profit with play
Article Abstract:
Origin Systems' Ultima Online is immensely popular and profitable, but it has also spawned a new industry. Players are making hundreds of dollars by selling their Ultima identities on eBay. Origin, which sees this phenomenon as the first real exchange between a virtual and a real economy, encourages the practice. The company is adding a feature to the game that will enable players to evaluate their virtual holdings and establish fair prices for them. New players who wish to bypass the process of developing a character and acquiring holdings will purchase the identities. The 'industry' has become something akin to a stock market for teenagers.
