Sexuality education and the schools: issues and answers

Article Abstract:

Sex education is a way by which individuals learn and develop beliefs, values and attitudes on identity, relationships and intimacy. It seeks to empower every person to be responsible for their sexual health. Education about sexuality starts in the family through the children's observations and experiences of with the other members of society. School-based programs complement this education by providing depth to their knowledge. Thus, sex education programs must be a product of community, family and the school's concerted efforts to be an effective avenue for change.

Colombia's "national project for sex education."

Article Abstract:

Colombia's government agency, the National Project for Sex Education, designs and executes policies for sexuality education programs in schools. It aims at changing the negative views of sexuality and redefining gender roles for social, judicial, and economic equality. The program also plans to enhance self-determination in family members and create a responsible attitude towards sexuality and reproductive health. Considering the country's diversity, the project has developed regional programs with a view to enhance sharing and participation.

Policy watch: the wait is over

Article Abstract:

Opponents of sex education participated in a 1995 congressional hearing, and their testimony lacked credibility. Progress in the areas of AIDS prevention and helping young people cope with matters such as sexual orientation is more likely to be made now that those who oppose discussion of such issues in schools have made their lack of a cogent argument apparent. Summaries of the testimony of several participants of the hearing are presented, along with a look toward the future.
