Technology Forecast of Space Robots to the Year 2000
Article Abstract:
Two commonly used technology forecasting concepts are presented: (1) generation dynamics and (2) precursors. Several sets of robot generation dynamics are especially relevant; the first is commercially oriented, the others are scientifically oriented. The precursors concept is based on the leadership of a given technology residing in one sector of the society. The basic technological levels for space robots in 1995-2000 are likely to be similar to those for industrial robots in the late 1980s. Special requirements for space robots are high reliability, lightweightness, and moderate speed. Space robotics systems will be expected to: (1) build large structures, (2) maintain and secure other platforms, satellites and spacecraft (3) service manufacturing facilities, and (4) provide support for transportation node activities. A diagram of the generation dynamics of industrial robots is included.

Expediting technology transfer with multimedia
Article Abstract:
Two new information technologies in the form of multimedia and virtual reality are discussed in relation to their usefulness in facilitating the transfer of technology from National Laboratories to the private sector for incorporation in commercial-level projects. The existing bottleneck in communications will have to be surmounted if the advent of these information technologies is to lead to the promised delivery of prototypes that merely await their efficient delivery to commercial firms for exploitation.

Gathering and using information for the selection of technology partners
Article Abstract:
Research into the features of the search process undertaken by companies seeking partners for technological cooperation is presented. It is concluded that few companies use formal procedures, even though a certain degree of formalization has a positive effect on the chances of identifying suitable partners in the area of exporting.
