The computerized, portable office: can it work for PHAs?
Article Abstract:
Public housing authorities (PHAs) cannot afford to delay computerization any longer considering the kind of administrative workloads that they have to maintain. A particularly welcome innovation is the concept of the Portable Computer Office (PCO) which entails the use of small and easy-to-carry computers. Such portable devices as laptops, palmtops, notebooks and pocket organizers allow housing managers to work away from the office without curtailing their ability to enter or access information. An added attraction of the PCO is its reasonable cost. A simple portable office can be set up for less than $1,000. In buying computers, PHAs are advised to plan for change since technologuical advances require that computers be upgraded periodically.

The JOH 1993 computer services review
Article Abstract:
Housing and community development organizations now have a wide range of choices for computer hardware and software to suit specific needs. New developments such as integration of agency functions, pen-based computers, portable computers, modems and desktop publishing can eliminate manual tasks and significantly improve organizational efficiency. New federal and local government regulations also allow forms to be transmitted through the computer. Most computer companies offer not only their products but training services as well, making computer systems easily applicable with sufficient training of employees. The computer systems of different companies are presented including brief descriptions on the products and services they offer.
