The 'public' up against the state: narrative cracks and credibility crisis in postcolonial Hong Kong

This article examines democratic change in the public sphere in postcolonial Hong Kong. The author focuses on how political discourses are constructed and articulated in the public arena, and how this political sociology can help maintain or change power structures that are undemocratic.

Etiquette books, discourse and the deployment of an order of things

The article argues that etiquette books can be viewed as useful indicators of the social evolution of a society. Various works on etiquette and their relationship to the transfer of power amongst social classes is evaluated.
