Urban access and rural productivity growth in post-Mao China
Article Abstract:
Rural economic reforms in China increased the productivity of rural areas near large cities. The household responsibility system, specialization policy and purchase price increases granted farmers the right to cultivate crops of their own choice and to sell the excess after meeting state procurement agreements. Responses to these reforms were more intense in rural areas near cities offering stronger markets and better infrastructure. Non-agricultural jobs later emerged as reforms continued.

The effect of household structure on women's economic activity and fertility: evidence from recent mothers in urban Mexico
Article Abstract:
The labor force participation and fertility of mothers with young children in urban Mexico are analyzed in relation to household structure and the availability of mother substitutes. Results show that availability of low-cost child care services increases the participation of recent mothers in the work force while having no effect on the fertility. Moreover, extended families also affect a mother's participation in the work force.
