Developmental changes in self-perception: the role of gender in a preadolescent clinical population

Article Abstract:

The self-perception of preadolescent girls declines with age, whereas the self-perception of preadolescent boys remains unchanged. The children's age and self-report of stressful feelings and behaviors, and their mothers' assessment of symptoms, can predict their global self-worth. Preadolescent girls find it difficult to maintain a positive self concept. Psychological disturbance, a measure of psychological symptomatology, in association with chronological age, is capable of predicting a child's self perception.

Self-consistency, self-enhancement, and accuracy in reactions to feedback

Article Abstract:

Self-consistency, people's perception of themselves, greatly influences their response to different types of feedback. A study found that people with relatively large amounts of self-confidence, when given positive feedback, accepted this feedback as as an accurate assessment, but were less willing to believe negative feedback. The exact opposite was found for people with low self-esteem.
