Greek Americanism, "New Greece," and Greek Orthodoxy
Article Abstract:
Greek Americanism is a more viable concept for people of Greek descent living in the US compared to the idea of creating a New Greece. Greek Americanism is based on the acceptance and blending of both Greek and American cultures to produce a unique culture. In contrast, the concept of New Greece is based on strict adherence to Greek mores, folkways and traditions. It also involves the use of Greek at home and at church, and the prohibition of interethnic marriages. Regretfully, the Greek Orthodox Church continues to be an obstacle to the full development of Greek Americanism.

Immigrants celebrate a pastor of tolerance: Padre Felix Varela
Article Abstract:
Padre Felix Varela was honored at the Church of the Transfiguration, one of the two churches he founded in New York, NY, by around 300 Chinese-American Catholics and Cubans. The Cuban priest was renowned for his help to immigrants who were mostly Irish at the time. Padre Varela also founded two schools and orphanages in New York, NY. Religious leaders, who attended the ceremony in his honor, compared the help he gave to Irish immigrants and the current hostility displayed towards immigrants.
