Conversational universals and comparative theory: turning to Swedish and American acknowledgement tokens in interaction
Article Abstract:
American and Swedish conversational acknowledgement tokens are used to evaluate issues of comparative theory. The results show that universality is observed across cultural placement and use of acknowledgement tokens. Topics and stories are organized by efforts to preserve rights and priveleges of tellers and efforts towards more active speakership. This allows for a substantive basis in making judgements about cultural similarities and differences.
