Maintaining the balance of power: taxation and democracy in England and France, 1340-1688
Article Abstract:
The argument that the English monarchy primarily relied on indirect taxation between the late medieval period and the Glorious Revolution of 1688 because it was easier and more lucrative than direct taxation is debunked. Rather, the reasons were regional in nature: the legacy of weak manorial control in the most wealthy regions; lack of warfare in England; strong resistance by well-to-do peasants at the countryside; and the weakness of royal representatives in those counties. This inability to exact direct taxation is commonly believes as the reason why English democracy flourished during that period.

Gender, work and culture: why the Industrial Revolution came early to England but late to China
Article Abstract:
China experienced the Industrial Revolution later than the UK despite similar gains in cotton-spinning technology in the 14th century due to its Confucian ethic which restricted women from obtaining extra-household employment. This restriction, which was in place from the Ming until the Imperial dynasties, was imposed by the Chinese state to maintain social control. It explains why China's textile production sector did not develop fully until the 1980s.

The Social Origins and Maintenance of Gender: communication styles, personality types and grid-group theory
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the bases of gender differences, with particular emphasis on distinctive communication styles. Results suggest that differences in communication styles reflect more profound differences in world views. Results also indicate that such differences are vital to the social maintenance of the changing constructive cultural diversity displayed by couples.
