Maternal smoking in pregnancy and sex differences in perinatal death between boys and girls
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the differences in the effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy on the risk of perinatal death between males and females. Data were drawn from 11,469 and 9,404 newborns taken from two birth cohorts in Northern Finland for 1966 and 1985-1986, respectively. Results indicate that maternal smoking during pregnancy may possibly be a critical determinant of the excess perinatal death for males over females.
