Policing Northern Ireland: current issues

Article Abstract:

Northern Ireland is facing policing problems, and police are making efforts to reorganize their present force. Efforts have been made to balance the composition of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) by rationalising the proportion of Protestants and Catholics in order avoid allegations of discrimination and political bias. An ethnographic analysis of the perceptions of Catholics and Protestants reveals that the relationship between the police and the two communities is continuously weakening.

Preserving the peace and maintaining order: deconstructing the legal landscape of public housing in West Belfast, Northern Ireland

Article Abstract:

A case study is presented on Divis Flats, a public housing project in Northern Ireland, and British legislation permitting surveillance to control violence in the area. The project, built in 1966, replaced the individual homes of the neighborhood, which posed logistic difficulties for police surveillance, replacing them with a condensed, easily monitored structure, prompting residents to view it as a prison.
