Russia and the Caucasus
Article Abstract:
Russian conquest of the Caucasus in the early 19th century was marked by the divide and rule tactics to subjugate the ethnically diverse populace, especially in the Mountaineer Republic of North Caucasus. The Transcaucasian states claimed independence before the demise of the USSR, but Russia's neo-colonial mentality has impelled their economic and political decline. Russian interference has also led to armed conflicts in the former autonomous republics and regions of North Caucasus, such as Chechnya. Turmoil will continue in the absence of a defined Russian policy towards the Caucasus.

UFOs over Russia and Eastern Europe
Article Abstract:
UFOs have been reported in Eastern Europe and Russia, and this has occurred more often after the collapse of communism, though why this is so has not been analyzed. Communist government treated reports of UFOs as propaganda with bourgeois origins, but these reports were also of interest to the higher echelons. Ufology appears to be especially important in Poland and Hungary, and UFO magazines and movies have been popular in Eastern Europe. Interest in UFOs could subside if their existence were proven and they were classified, or if their existence were disproved.

Russia, the Caucasus, and Chechenya
Article Abstract:
Russia is reluctant to lose hold over prized territories along the Danube and in the Caucasus Mountains and Central Asia that it had conquered before the disintegration of the Soviet Union. In an attempt to keep the rebel Soviet republics under control, they have tried to divide the population along ethnic lines. However, the Chechen rebels, by offering tough resistance to the Russian troops, have reiterated and substantiated their claim to sovereignty.
