Planning, communities and empowerment: an introduction to participatory rural appraisal
Article Abstract:
Participatory rural appraisal (PRA) is a family of methods that enable communities to carry out positive changes through identification and analysis of critical elements in the lives of community residents. PRA is characterized by a political stance and believes in pursuing change through active participation by citizens. Despite its popularity, PRA has its own pitfalls. These include the absence of critical examination of PRA, the danger of overemphasizing indigenous knowledge and the unconditional promotion of community ownership.
