What society? What sociology? The Chilean post-democratization debate
Article Abstract:
Issues of regional or national society have historically been a key feature of Latin American sociology, with sociology focusing more on ideological and political debate than on its disciplinary stance. Debates by Chilean sociologists during the military regime focused on social changes deriving from the dictatorship, the relationship between the political and the social, and political redemocratization and transition. The quality of political life and democracy has become a major theme, as well as issues of identity and sectoral concerns.

Sociology and border disciplines: Opportunities and barriers to intellectual growth: Cultural studies and sociology of culture
Article Abstract:
Moving from a sociology department in the UK to one in the US in the late 1980s required moving disciplines from social sciences to humanities, although the work did not change at all. The benefits of developing a truly interdisciplinary dialogue in the cultural studies sector are identified, as cultural analysis can benefit significantly from sociologists' input on institutional and social relations.
