Claude E. Shannon
Article Abstract:
Scientist/engineer Claude E. Shannon is considered the 'father' of information theory because of his innovative work in defining a digital framework for encoding information efficiently and protecting it from interference when transmitted over a channel. Much of this work, largely performed at AT and T's Bell Laboratories in the 1940s and 1950s, underlies the design of all systems that store information digitally. Shannon also showed how Boolean algebra could be employed to represent switches and relays in electronic circuits, enabling the testing of circuits and, eventually, hardware and software designs before they are actually implemented. He went on to explore some of the ramifications and applications of information theory, but Shannon's long withdrawal from public view since the 1960s led many to think him deceased. He spent much of this time as a professor of communications at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The impacts of Shannon's work, his current activities and an overview of his life are described.
