Ethiopian Haile Gebresilasie set an new record and new standard for the 5,000-meter race by completing it in an astonishing 12:44.39. Gebresilasie increased his speed after eight laps, leaving his competition well behind. The race was the 1995 Weltklasse 5,000 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Battle of the sexes
Article Abstract:
A recent study misused statistics to claim that women runners were improving faster and were about to overtake men. Comparing them only over the last few years, when men and women had equal chances to compete, shows a women's improvement curve equal the men's.

The Olympics produced many stirring performances by world-class runners. There were other touching moments which included a victory lap shared by women runners from Ethiopia and South Africa. The games included athletes rescued from the Bosnian civil war.
