Electrochemical routes for engineering tool production
Article Abstract:
Modern techniques of concurrent engineering enable products to be developed through continuous iteration and interactive testing, using virtual reality testing or rapid prototypes. The rapid prototyping market is growing rapidly and the technique of sterolithography (SL) can produce models with accuracies better than plus or minus 80 mum. Models can also be used for stress analysis and have provided a route to producing injection mould tools. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) tools use SL models as mandrels or formers on which electroforms are produced and which are then used as die-sink tools.

Challenges for optical lithography in production at the sub-half-micron scale
Article Abstract:
Challenges facing sub-half-micron optical lithography in production include reduced aerial image contrast and intensity, degrade isofocal behaviour, and reduced process linearity. Several of these effects are demonstrated, along with ways of countering them. The results were generated by computer simulation using commercial lithography modeling programmes. Better resolution can be obtained with higher NA, but at the expense of depth of focus.

Optical-fibre strain sensing for structural health and load monitoring
Article Abstract:
Intra-core Bragg reflection gratings made in communications-grade optical fibre are increasingly used as strain-sensing elements in mechanical structures. Techniques are need to to implement multi-element arrays for the efficient application of the technology. GEC-Marconi Materials has investigated Bragg fibre gratings applications, and the current status of Bragg grating fabrication technology is discussed.
