Safety critical software in nuclear power
Article Abstract:
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) began work on a software standard for reactor safety applications in 1980, and IEC880(2) was published in 1986, providing an important reference point for nuclear plants. The Sizewell B PWR plant makes extensive use of computers, and the complete reactor protection function for postulated faults of station design is significant. Successful implementation of reactor protection systems depends on the formal expression of requirements, needing trial applications.

A Russian experimental high-power, short-pulse radar
Article Abstract:
Traditional pulse-Doppler radars are problematical when used for the detection of low cross-section targets at low level. The Russian Academy of Sciences won a contract to design and build a radar system, under a collaborative agreement between the UK MoD and GEC-Marconi. Experimental trials covered both static test and dynamic test. The equipment provides high range resolution and adequate energy for detection through a short-duration pulse of high peak power.
