Cruise operators prefer diesel electric

Diesel electric propulsion is preferred by the cruise industry. For instance, five prime movers on a diesel-electric driveline needed 17% less maintenance time compared to four 4,500kW(6,030 bhp), according to a study by Finnish-based consultant Deltamarin on maintenance requirements for diesel mechanical and diesel electric drives. Overall, diesel electric boasts of an 18% advantage as engines account for over 80% of the total maintenance costs on the complete installation.

The Fast Ferry Conference and Exhibition held in 2001 in New Orleans, LA, showcased many of the latest engines. The market is not very good especially for fast ferries, but there are a number of exciting products available.
