The 'virtual' double bottom
Article Abstract:
Very large cargo carriers that are 25 years old can have an extended service life by converting their single hulls into hydrostatic balanced loading (HBL). According to Concordia Maritime, the conversion would not only extend VLCCs life but also increase their environmental protection in the event of grounding. In HBL, the cargo level is slightly reduced while inert gas pressure is kept to a minimum inside the ullage space. The result is lesser pressure exerted by cargo compared to the water pressure under the hull.
