First Olsen tanker converted to shuttle role
Article Abstract:
First Olsen Tankers Ltd's tanker 'Knock Whillan' has been converted into a shuttle tanker to take advantage of low oil prices prevailing in the world market. The conversion will modify the existing design of the ship into a twin-skeg design. This will make the 'Knock Whillan' capable of loading a million barrels of crude oil. One advantage of the conversion is the elimination of the need to offload oil in a terminal. Instead, the crude oil can be transported directly from the field. This translates to significant savings in time and money.

Banana split
Article Abstract:
The refrigerated integral containers business is expanding more than that of reefer ships. They have gained more than 50% of the cargo market and their business is expected to grow at a rate of 5% as compared with 2.5% for traditional reefer ships. The booming international trade of bananas is an example of how refrigerated containerships gain market share over reefer trade. The North-South produce trade is a good market for containerships seeking additional revenue or carriers seeking to fill in space in their ships.

Remote plate check
Article Abstract:
MeasureMate system employs ultrasonic gauging techniques that uses a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) consisting of 16 ultrasonic probes. The ROV goes through the ship's bottom and scans bottom shell plates from the outside. A better picture of the plate condition is provided because 100 thickness readings per square meter are take, compared with the conventional manual survey that is based on the three to six measurements per plate.
