Article Abstract:
General Electric Co.'s Major Appliance Group used Value Analysis (VA) in its development of an automated dishwasher line. With VA, the dishwashing units and the manufacturing process were able to be analyzed and evaluated. Consumer input was a major factor in the development of the new automatic dishwasher line. The manufacturing system of the group was also redesigned. Computers now control the automated manufacturing system.

General Electric Co. has established company-wide buying teams, referred to as councils, to perform Value Analysis (VA) techniques. Centralized buying councils permit adherance to rules of value analysts. Products are standardized. Identification of the lowest cost supplier is feasible. Volume purchasing reduces costs. Centralization in purchasing increases communication within the organization.
