Lub manufacturer face up to new challenges
Article Abstract:
Marine lubricant manufacturers, such as Texaco and Chevron have teamed up to boost sales of fuel, marine lubricants and related products in the face of intensifying competition from other major oil producers. Industry analysts believe that a reduction in competition with regard to the development of new grades of lubricants could negatively affect product development efforts of these oil companies. The industry has been facing other problems caused by low oil prices and great economic pressure on shipowners.

Machinery monitoring - the alternative engineer
Article Abstract:
Modern ships typically feature a host of new technologies designed to minimize the number of crew required to operate them. One of the most interesting areas of automation concerns engine monitoring. Instead of well-trained engineers, newer vessels have state-of-the-art engine monitoring systems. The concept is not actually new, with monitoring systems having been available as early as 1968, but today's models are much more advanced and they offer an unprecedented level of flexibility.

Jets power ahead: the trend towards larger water jet installations in larger vessels continues to be much in evidence
Article Abstract:
Water jets are becoming popular among many new ship designs such as Stena's HSS 1500 ferry. The Stena Explorer is powered by four KaMeWa 160 water jets that are powered by two gas turbines at a top speed of over 40 knots. Aside from its apparent fuel efficiency, the water jets provide greater maneuverability at high speeds and offer significant internal noise reductions.
