New Zealand logging industry accident reporting scheme: focus for a human factors research programme

Article Abstract:

The use of a voluntary accident reporting scheme (ARS) in identifying the requirements for, and monitoring the effectiveness of interventions within the New Zealand logging industry is described. To illustrate the uses of ARS, two case examples are presented. These are the development of chainsaw cut-resistant legwear and the determination of the most appropriate color for high visibility clothing. The first example has been in existence for more than ten years, while the second became common practice only in 1993.

Factors related to adult drowning

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the rates and causes of adult drownings in Dade County, FL. Results from 89 case studies showed that 83.1% of drownings were accidental with males comprising 76.4% of the victims. Most drownings occured at beaches and canals while swimming or when victims accidentally fell into the water. All alcohol or drug related cases were accidental with a higher incidence for males. Most drowning victims were pronounced dead at the scene with only 38.2% receiving resuscitation attempts.

A human factors commentary on innovations at railroad-highway grade crossings in Australia

Article Abstract:

Over 530 persons were killed at Australian railroad crossings between 1970 and 1979, while over 170 were killed at these locations between 1990 and 1999. Research suggests one factor in this difference is the need for different signs at rural and metropolitan crossings.
