Article Abstract:
The International Maritime Organization's decision on compulsory electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) carriage requirements for shipping has yet to be reached as the final discussion regarding the topic is set to be in 2008. Some sectors of the shipping industry resist this new technology despite the benefits that the use of ECDIS can provide. Proposal dates such as 2010 and 2012 have yet to be confirmed.

The amendments to Safety of Life at Sea regulations adopted by International Maritime Organization's Maritime Safety Committee in Istanbul are discussed. Changes to various marine safety standards, like passenger ship safety, were adopted.
