Wake-up call for bridgewatch alarms
Article Abstract:
The International Maritime Organization is considering whether to make bridge navigation watch alarms mandatory for ships. There is a concern that the alarms would be used to endorse putting fewer officers on watch while others say that ensuring that crews get enough sleep is a better solution to the problem of deck officers falling asleep on the job.

The role of the voyage data recorder is expanding as attitudes toward the deployment of such systems on ship bridges change and technology allows the storage of more data. Usage of these systems and access to stored data are issues to be resolved.
