Diversification of output by some firms and others' aim for survival reflect the distinction of the Polish shipbuilding industry. The failure to create an all-Polish shipbuilding holding leads Szczecin Shipyard, leading Polish shipbuilder, to divest into chemical tankers and open hatch bulkers. Meanwhile, forerunner Gdynia Shipyard awaits confirmation from outside investors before embarking into a diversification program.

Shiprepair yards in the European Atlantic seaboard are optimistic that 1997 will prove to be a good year for them. The Lisnave Group, Astilleros Espanioles, and other yards are currently expanding their facilities and restructuring their management so as to remain competitive in the ship repair trade. Shipyards in the Atlantic seaboard are seeking to lure shippers away from Asian and Mid East repair yards.

Like the rest of the Spanish maritime sector, AESA has been negatively affected by Spain's entry into the European Union (EU).
