Short sea sector meets specific trade needs
Article Abstract:
Shippers in the coastal or short sea sector will face demands for fast, flexible craft as well as demands for specialty vessels for certain industries. US coastal traffic is predominantly tugs and barges, which gives shippers flexibility in both cargo routing and traffic pattern changes. Shippers currently suffer from competition with trucking firms who can deliver to a company's door, but are seeking ways to have more control of delivery after it leaves the dock. Japanese companies are researching a high-speed ship which will carry 1,000 tons and travel at 50 knots, and expect to complete research by 1994.

Article Abstract:
KSW Systems, based in Germany, is designing ships that incorporate the automatic seaborne pallet handling system (ASPH) for reefers. There are yet no constructed ships that use the system, but the company is finalizing designs for its Reefer 175 and 3500 ships in early 1997. The ships, which are due to be delivered at the end of 1998, will adopt container ship designs that are already in place. The Reefer 175 has capacity for 4,770 fruit pallets and speed of 20 knots, while the 3500 ship can accommodate 3,550 fruit pallets and sail at 19.6 knots.
