Yard safety in spotlight
Article Abstract:
The incidence of accidents in Singaporean shipyards has grown steadily since 1987. The rise in shipyard accidents has prompted the Singaporean Labor Ministry to mandate the establishment of Vessel Safety Coordination Committees in all shipyards and to conduct routine safety audits in yards with more than 200 workers. However, shipyards noted that one major factor in rise of accidents is the increased dependence on foreign unskilled workers. The only way to reduce accidents in shipyards is to train unskilled workers in proper safety measures.
