Special ships keep builders afloat
Article Abstract:
Smaller shipyards in Italy still have business, but they are finding it difficult, with a lot of competition and high costs, and need continued subsidies from the European Union. According to the managing director of Nuovi Cantieri Apuania (Marrina di Carrara, Italy), Umberto Mosca, the difference in price between Italy and the Far East is an average of 19%-20%, but sometimes as much as 30%-40%. He believes that higher quality is expected from European shipbuilders.

To board or not to board
Article Abstract:
The Port State Control Program of the US Coast Guard, a system established in 1994, is of immeasurable value to the shipping industry, despite its disadvantages. Under the system, all ships entering the US are checked before entering US ports. A control system such as this ensures that substandard ships and operators which do not conform to strict safety standards are eliminated from the industry.
