The Millenium time bomb

Article Abstract:

The UK Marine Safety Agency has released a report entitled 'Marine Electronic Systems and the year 2000' wherein it outlines the potential impact of the millenium bug on the shipping industry. Specifically, the report points out that embedded systems, machinery and navigation equipment may fail due to their inability to recognize the year 2000. Embedded systems are defined by the agency as components driven by software which are integrated into devices used in controlling, monitoring and assisting the operation of equipment and machinery.

A weighty problem

Article Abstract:

Ballast pumps are important especially for container ships which, according to international regulations, cannot leave ports without being properly balanced. Since ballast pumps are required to pump tons of salt water while payloads are increased, this suggests that ballast pumps rarely come cheap. Some newbuilders take advantage of scrimping on equipment for ballast pumps to save thousands of dollars, to the detriment of the operators. Owners should ensure that there is a certain margin of safety when installing ballast pumps.
