The pitch battle
Article Abstract:
Users of either the FP or CP propeller present their views regarding each system, including their advantages and disadvantages. The FP propeller, according to its supporters, is the cheapest and most efficient type, especially for vessels operating in open sea and transferring from one region to another. This type of propeller provides a slight overspeed to prevent engine overloading. The CP propeller, on the other hand, is flexible especially when maneuvering, slow steaming and when utilizing engine installations and is effective during crash stop. Unlike the FP propeller, the CP propeller can be adjusted to prevent overspeeding or overloading.

Full steam ahead
Article Abstract:
Propulsion efficiency depends on the propeller type and design including the shaft power and speed, vessel speed, stern aperture dimensions as well as the number of blades. Contra-rotating propellers improve propulsion by 10%-25%, while overlapping propellers having twin propellers and twin shafts that overlap have efficiency gains of 15%. Shrouded propellers depend on the shroud's shape to control the water into the propeller. Other propeller options to increase propulsion include tip plates, pressure optimized propellers, and reaction devices.

Tunnel vision
Article Abstract:
Transverse thrusters, also known as tunnel thrusters, are coming under increasing demand for all types of vessels. Transverse thrusters are becoming increasingly popular because they represent the simplest and most cost-effective method for improving vessel efficiency. Propeller manufacturers from around the world offer a wide array of thruster packages, from simple components to highly-complex units. A brief evaluation of three thruster systems is presented.
