Comparative tourism development in Asia and the Pacific

Article Abstract:

The Asia-Pacific region has seen a continuous growth in international tourism since the 1960s largely because of heightened intraregional travel among the area's residents. Additional factors fueling growth in the tourist industry include rapid economic advancement, lower travel costs because of jet aircraft and more leisure time. Some countries have also reduced exit travel and currency restrictions for their residents. Comparison of tourism data of the region included Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.

Airport expansion, direct flights, and consumer choice of travel destinations: the case of Hawaii's neighbor islands

Article Abstract:

A quasi-experimental approach was used to study the consequences of offering direct flights to the Hawaii's neighbor islands. Using an interrupted time series model, it was determined that the initiation of direct flights benefitted both tourists and island residents. Direct flights directly resulted in increased tourism, the dispersion of tourism-generated income among the islands and minimizing air traffic congestion at Oahu's Honolulu International Airport.
