A LIM-homeodomain combinatorial code for motor-neuron pathway selection
Article Abstract:
A combinatorial code of LIM-homeodomain proteins could underlie the control of motor-neuron pathway selection. Functions of the genes have been revealed in neuronal survival, neuronal function and axon guidance in studies in mouse, Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. Two members of the gene family have been studied in Drosophila, lim3 and islet and it is shown that lim3 is expressed via a specific subset of islet-expressing motor neurons, constituting a combinatorial code.
