Remodelling of hand representation in adult cortex determined by timing of tactile stimulation

Article Abstract:

Serial induction of stimuli in the fingers changes the neuronal specificity and somatosensory maps of the hand surface in adult owl monkey, trained to respond to particular stimulus sequence events. Synchronous application of remodelling stimuli to the fingers causes their integration whereas, asynchronous induction of stimuli causes their segregation. A terminal electrophysiological neuronal response mapping analysis reveals that conditioned monkeys have multiple-digit receptive fields.

Real brains for real robots

Article Abstract:

Research has shown that there is a string link between neural activity in the cerebral cortex of the brain, and movements of the hand. Scientist now report that they can drive the movement of robotic arms using electric signals from five areas of a monkey's cerebral cortex.
