Survival of postfledgling mallards in northcentral Minnesota
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken in northcentral Minnesota into the causes and timing of mortality among fledged juvenile mallards has indicated that management of natural mortality has limited potential for boosting recruitment of mallards to the fall flight. Waterfowl managers must identify mortality factors that account for a large proportion of overall annual mortality and indicate potential for modification if local recruitment is to be boosted by cutting mortality. Factors other than hunting were responsible for only a small number of mortalities among fledged juvenile mallards and indicated little potential for modification.

Response of nesting ducks to predator exclosures and water conditions during drought
Article Abstract:
Low nest success is thought to be a major cause of decreased duck recruitment in North America's Prairie Pothole Region. A new study investigates whether the use of small enclosures will decrease predation and increase local duck recruitment. Populations of dabbling ducks are monitored in several study areas during periods of increasing drought from 1987 to 1991. It is shown that ducks nest in higher densities inside enclosures and that breeding populations of mallards, pintails, gadwalls and teal increased over time. Further work is necessary to assess the effect of drought on breeding ducks.
