Ageing population of voters backs Alzheimer's funding
Article Abstract:
Pressure groups have been lobbying Washington DC for increased funding by the National Institute of Health (NIH) for particular diseases. The Alzheimer's Association is seeking an extra $100 million for the disease, with similar demands being made by advocates of Parkinson's Disease. Richard Hodes, director of the National Institute on Ageing, and Newt Gingrich, Speaker of the House of Representatives, argue against the Alzheimer's Association's attempt to boost research spending, saying that Congress should determine how NIH money is spent.

NIH heads for 7.1 per cent budget growth
Article Abstract:
A 7.1% increase in funding has been approved for the National Institutes of Health in 1998, taking the NIH's total income to 13.65 billion US dollars. However, the funding bill has to pass through the House and Senate before funding can begin. Government experts predict that the bill, which has been held up in connection to other political negotiations, will be passed shortly.
