Welfare cannot be made to go away

Article Abstract:

Welfare programs, such as medical care for the poor and pensions for the elderly, are inevitable in modern society. Consequently, the current efforts by recession-plagued governments in the UK, the US, Germany, France and the Scandinavian countries to reduce welfare are unlikely to succeed. The very poor must receive welfare benefits if the slightly poor and the rich are to be kept on amicable terms. However, governments should not allow any particular benefit to become an inalienable right.

Animal welfare and the veal trade

Article Abstract:

Animal welfare groups in the UK stage demonstrations and protests against British export of veal calves as their fate in those countries remains unknown. The activists feel that the veal-farmers export the veals without considering the treatment that will be meted out to them in the foreign countries. The welfare groups' concern may stem from xenophobia more than a real interest in the veals' fate since earlier instances of atrocities on the animals did not evoke similar response.

Off-the-shelf proteins that rival tailor-made antibodies as catalysts

Article Abstract:

Serum albumins, off-the-shelf proteins, catalyze the eliminative ring-opening of a benzisoxazole at the same rate as other catalytic antibodies. The albumins use a lysine side-chain amino group as the catalytic general base. Enzyme catalysis requires specific conditions, as the active-site catalytic groups and the substrate need to be positioned precisely in a well-structured environment. A nonspecific medium effect enhances the antibody catalysis in both systems.
