Ad lib: Meta Ads seek to address some of the problems plaguing banner ads on the World Wide Web

Article Abstract:

ICon CMT Corp. offers companies a way to advertise on the World Wide Web without allowing computer users to skip over their messages. ICon's "Meta Ads" appear onscreen for several seconds before a computer user's desired electronic page is called up. Meta Ads thwart software programs such as Fast Forward that enable users to bypass Web advertising banners automatically. Microsoft Corp., Bayerische Motoren Werke AG and other firms have shown interest in Meta Ads, says Shawn Gold of Icon.

Activating the ActiMates

Article Abstract:

A data transmission system developed by MicroSoft for educational toys may yet make its way into mainstream applications. The system, created for the ActiMates animated toy line, could be used to send commercials and other promotions to consumers via their PCs. Although MicroSoft officials stress that the system was created for toys, the firm is studying other uses.
