Article Abstract:

An executive editor for the newspaper Sun Journal recalls how they redesigned the 150-year-old newspaper. The redesign was guided by four main ideas: hiring a consultant to provide guidance, making the hourglass as the redesign concept, making the design appealing and daring, and limiting the role of the executive editor in the redesign. The project originally had a timetable of 14 weeks, but this was extended to 17 weeks. A designer from Montreal was selected for the redesign process because of the formal look that her redesigned newspapers exuded.

Article Abstract:

The Citrus County Chronicle in Inverness, FL, has a daily circulation of 20,000 readers, most of whom are retirees and tourists. The newspaper's overall lay-out is interesting and the use of teasers and quotes help stimulate interest among readers. However, most of the stories contained in the paper are crowded, especially those on the front page. Moreover, some of the photos are placed near stories, fooling readers into thinking that they have interesting stories that precede them.
