A positive look at negative space

Article Abstract:

Negative space is an important aspect of type design and the legibility of a type face. It refers to the white space in and around letters and can also refer to the space between letters. By means of the digital process called kerning, negative space is controlled. In addition, the general reduction of letterspace is another function of kerning. The application of kerning improves legibility and allows more letters into a line but an overuse of it will affect legibility.

Keep the nameplate, but modernize the newspaper

Article Abstract:

The German newspaper Offenburger Tageblatt has been published for the past 187 years. Publishers of the paper has been conservative regarding changes in the layout and design of the paper. However, they have decided that paper needed a makeover for the new millennium. The nameplate has remained relatively unchanged while the different sections have been allowed to change their section nameplates so as not to lose the regional appeal of the paper's sections.
