Article Abstract:
Despite mechanization, animal power is still much in demand in most countries worldwide, particularly for small farmers in Asia, Latin America and North Africa. Farming animals such as cows, water buffalos, oxen, horses and donkeys are used in land cultivation as well as transport. The relevance of draft animals was rediscovered due to the rise in oil prices in the late 1970s. This led to government-assisted projects promoting the use of draft animals especially in some new African states. Animal power is expected to remain an important power source in agriculture.
